Reason: The parathyroid is comprised of four small glands, usually located directly behind the thyroid in the lower neck. Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more parathyroid glands releases too much parathyroid hormone without regard to the already high levels of calcium within your blood stream. Hyperparathyroidism can result in osteoporosis, depression, fatigue and constipation.
Preparation: The day before your surgery, you will be asked not to eat after midnight.
Parathyroid Surgery Procedure: The operation is performed through a small collar incision in your neck. The sutures dissolve over time and the scar should eventually fade.
Post Procedure: You will be admitted to the hospital overnight to keep you comfortable and monitor your recovery following surgery. You can expect to go home the next day.
Follow-Up: You will need to take 1-2 Tums® tablets per day as a calcium supplement for 2-3 weeks following surgery, until Dr. Harrison can check your calcium levels during a follow-up appointment. The calcium in your bones also needs to be replaced gradually over the next 3-6 months post-operatively. Dr. Harrison will want to see you back within 1-2 weeks after surgery to discuss your pathology and ensure you are doing well.
